The Role of the Wali in Muslim Marriage

2 November 2026 · 5 min read

The wali is a guardian who looks after a person’s interests in marriage. Understanding the role helps families and candidates approach it with respect.

What is a wali?

A wali is typically a woman’s father or, if he is unavailable, another close male relative. Their role is to protect her interests, help assess a suitor, and take part in the marriage contract.

Scholars differ on the exact rulings and on how the role applies in different circumstances, so families often follow the opinion of their own school or local scholar.

What a wali is responsible for

A good wali asks about the suitor’s character, faith, and ability to provide and be kind. They are not there to block a match for pride or convenience, but to make sure their relative is protected and well treated.

Wali involvement on Florence

On Florence, a member can add a wali, who receives their own account. Depending on the member’s settings, the wali can confirm a profile before it is approved and has read-only visibility of matches and conversations.

A father or mother who completes the registration themselves is treated as the wali directly.

When there is no wali

New Muslims and others without a Muslim guardian can ask for an admin-assigned Mentor on Florence, who provides the same kind of oversight. Our guide for new Muslims explains more.
