What to Look for in a Spouse in Islam
2 November 2026 · 5 min read
Choosing a spouse is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. Islam gives clear guidance on what matters most, and a little structure helps you apply it.
Start with deen and character
The Prophet ﷺ said that a woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion, and advised choosing the one with religion (Bukhari and Muslim). The same principle applies to men: look for someone whose faith shapes how they behave.
Practice matters more than labels. Look at how a person prays, how they speak about others, how they treat their parents, and how they handle disagreement.
Check compatibility honestly
Shared faith is the foundation, but day-to-day compatibility matters too: where you want to live, whether you want children and when, attitudes to work and money, and how involved extended family should be.
It is far kinder to discuss these openly before nikkah than to discover a mismatch after it.
Involve family and trusted people
Parents, siblings and trusted friends often see things we cannot, especially when we are hopeful. Ask someone who knows the person well, and listen to concerns rather than dismissing them.
Make istikhara, then decide
Pray istikhara, consult people you trust, and then make your decision with tawakkul. Istikhara is not a dream you wait for; it is asking Allah to guide you towards what is best and to ease or turn away what is not.
