Mahr and Nikah Budget: A Practical Guide

2 November 2026 · 5 min read

Money is one of the most common sources of stress around weddings. Planning openly and early makes the nikah calmer and starts your marriage on good footing.

What is mahr?

Mahr is a gift from the husband to the wife, given with the marriage contract. The Quran instructs: “And give the women their dowries graciously” (4:4). It belongs to the wife.

There is no fixed amount. It is agreed between the two sides, and many scholars encourage keeping it reasonable and within the husband’s means.

Walima

The walima is the wedding feast. The Prophet ﷺ told Abdur Rahman ibn Awf to hold a walima “even with a single sheep” (Bukhari), a reminder that it is about sharing the joy, not about showing off.

Plan the budget together

List every cost: mahr, venue, food, clothing, photography, travel and the first months of married life. Agree who is contributing what, and set a ceiling before you book anything.

The Florence app includes a Nikah Cost Calculator for exactly this, with a summary you can share with your family.

Avoid starting married life in debt

A simple wedding that you can afford is better than an expensive one you spend years paying off. Decide together what matters most and be willing to let the rest go.
