Questions to Ask Before Nikkah
2 November 2026 · 5 min read
Getting to know a potential spouse should be purposeful. Here are the areas worth covering, ideally with a family member or chaperone aware of the conversation.
Faith and practice
How do you practise daily: prayer, Quran, fasting? What does a good Islamic home look like to you? How do you want to grow in your deen together? Are there scholars or communities you follow?
Family and living arrangements
Where do you want to live? How close do you want to be to your parents and mine? What role do you expect extended family to play? How do you handle conflict between your family and spouse?
Children and parenting
Do you want children, and when? How would you like to raise them in terms of Islamic education and schooling? What do you think about working and caring for children together?
Money and work
What are your career plans? How do you manage money, and do you have any debts? Who will be responsible for what financially? What do you expect regarding mahr and wedding costs?
Daily life and expectations
What does a normal week look like for you? How do you handle stress, anger and disagreement? What are you hoping for in a spouse, and what would be a dealbreaker for you?
Keep conversations respectful, keep family informed, and remember that this stage is about discovering whether you could build a life together.
